Household Herbal Highs

Check It Out: There Could Be Household Herbal Highs in Your Cupboards!

Admittedly, I like many others have been dangerously unaware of the fact that I could have in my home, herbal products that can provide a high to anyone. Never did I think that something as innocent as the spices in my cabinets could be used for purposes other than their intended purpose. There are three very common household items described below that could be dangerous if used to get a high from.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is a tropical evergreen tree that is native to eastern India. The seeds are the source for nutmeg and mace. It is light brown in color with a grayish tinge to it. As an herbal high, it is most often used as a hallucinogen and is consumed in doses of approximately 5 to 6 grams. It is generally smoked.  The following effects have been noted: the resulting high from nutmeg can last anywhere from 5 to 12 hours depending in part to the amount that is used.

The high usually doesn’t start until anywhere from 2 hours to 7 hours after consumption. Recovery time from the high once it is over is about 2 hours. This means the high, from ingestion to completion is about twenty-four hours. Some noted effects of dizziness and grogginess lasting even beyond that.

Some users have reported that they suffer a loss of both fine and gross motor skills, loss of short term memory (inability to recall things or words said just seconds or minutes before). Dizziness and extreme thirst are experienced as well.

Green Tea (Camelia Sisneis) is another common item known in recent days as being very healthy and supportive for good health. The Leaves of green tea (unfermented tea leaves) are smoked in either a pipe or they can be rolled into a “joint”. The high attained from Green tea lasts for about 20 minutes or so. It is readily available in most food, retail, and discount stores.

Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, cola nuts, and cocoa. Caffeine as well as hundreds of other chemicals is found in coffee including many cancer causing agents. The heat that comes from roasting coffee beans creates creosote, pymdine, tars, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The darker the roast the more hazardous it becomes to one’s health.

There are varied effects with the ingestion of caffeine. It raises the levels of adrenaline and can lead to adrenal gland exhaustion. Caffeine addiction can make quitting smoking more difficult. Caffeine withdrawal can cause mild to severe headaches, nausea, fatigue, and depression - and can last for several days.  One way to prevent this is to substitute your regular coffee for decaf and increase the decaf till you are drinking 100% decaf coffee.

Caffeine makes quitting smoking more difficult because it is in reality another addiction. Actually, one exacerbates the other. Tobacco contains caffeine. There are I am sure, other household herbal highs available but these were the most common noted. The lesson to be learned here is everything can be suspect and if desperate enough, people will try anything.
