Traditional and Non-traditional Ways to Stop Smoking

May 14, 2007 @ 05:49 am by admin

There are many ways to quit smoking. There are traditional ways and not so traditional ways. In order to provide options to individuals who want to quit and do so successfully, a brief description of these ways to stop smoking is provided.

Many people turn to herbs to quit smoking because they are much safer and there is no additional nicotine being introduced into the blood stream. Withdrawal symptoms are easier to deal with. The cravings for tobacco are not as intense.

Herbs can either be smoked or chewed to gain success in quitting smoking. The thinking is that when you want a cigarette, reach for the herbs instead. They are not addictive and will help rid the body of the toxins related to nicotine.

Lozenges and gum made with herbs have a pleasant flavor. They help to ease the symptoms of withdrawal; headaches, nausea, dizziness, and irritability. They also tend to ease the cravings and the need to have something in the mouth.

There are two types of inhalers, the typical oral inhaler whereby the unit is placed between the lips and a deep inhalation delivers the medication to the lungs. The second type of inhalers merely requires the user to simply smell the inhaler and the medicine are quickly delivered. Mouth sprays are sprayed into the mouth and the medication is absorbed into the blood stream very quickly.

Herbal chews including All Mint Chews are very similar to chewing tobacco and is used in the same way. It is placed between the gums and cheek and chewed. All mint chews are 100% mint and they and the pouches can safely be eaten and the juices can be safely swallowed.

All of the above ways to stop smoking have nicotine counterparts. They all ease symptoms related to nicotine withdrawal. They help relieve the cravings as well. The nicotine based products may lengthen the time for recovery.

Others opt for the most natural (?) method-going cold turkey. There is no medicine, no alternative to tobacco, and no abatement of withdrawal and cravings help. The decision is made to quit and the smokes are disposed of, and it is done. They’ve kicked the habit.

Most however, opt for either individual or group counseling. Others turn to support groups. These can include Nicotine Anonymous based on the 12 step format. Peer directed support groups are also a tool for smokers who want to quit.

Other smokers turn to addiction centers/clinics. Depending on the depth and severity of their addiction, they may choose to do treatment as an outpatient or as inpatient. In this situation, medications will likely be prescribed and intense counseling both individual and group will be provided. Alone each of these methods may be successful.  A combination of these methods will likely provide greater success for the person attempting to “kick the habit”. Quitting smoking is not easy by any stretch of the imagination.
